After over a year on methadone, I want to come off it completely. How long will the detox take?

It can be difficult to quit methadone cold turkey, so the best thing to do is start taking your dose down, bit by bit, usually 5mg at a time. It will take longer to come off, but it will be much easier.

I came off by tapering down. The doc reduced by dosage initially by 5mg and then a bit more, until eventually it was down to nothing. It worked out well.

It lasts quite a few days in your system, so the withdrawal can be between 3 days – a week, which will involve nausea, the shakes and probably depression.
